Epitalon

A four-amino-acid peptide whose sequence was derived from epithalamin, a preparation extracted from the pineal gland.

What is being investigated

Directions the published work points at, and how far each has actually got. These are open questions, not established effects: most of what looks promising in cells does not replicate in animals, and most of what works in animals does not work in people. Nothing here is a claim about what this compound does for anyone.

  1. Telomerase activation and telomere length

Reported induction of telomerase activity and telomere elongation in cultured human fibroblasts, with extension of their replicative lifespan. From one group, and that qualification applies to everything on this list.

    Cell and tissue studies

  2. Lifespan and tumour incidence in rodents

The animal work the group published alongside the cell studies. Rodent lifespan studies are the point at which most ageing hypotheses either survive or stop, and independent replication is what they have not had.

    Animal studies

  3. Pineal function and circadian rhythm

The sequence came from a pineal extract, and part of the literature follows that origin into melatonin rhythm rather than into telomeres.

    Animal studies

  4. Whether telomere length is worth lengthening

The open question above all of it, and it is not about this peptide. Telomere shortening tracks ageing; whether reversing it is beneficial, neutral or a cancer risk is unresolved in the field generally.
